Proof that Mario and Luigi live painful lives.

Released in 1985 Super Mario Bros. is one of the most influential and important games in the history of video games. As such it should come as no surprise that even more than 35 years after its release the game continues to inspire people to create all sorts of content based on this landmark game. The latest such creation is a video by the wildly popular Japanese YouTuber Sushi Ramen Riku.

This brand new video kicks off 2021 in true Sushi Ramen Riku style. Aside from the obligatory Mario (and Luigi) cosplay, the video features a real world recreation of the end of a Super Mario Bros. stage. It also shows Riku (as Mario) having to deal with a deadly (and very large) turtle shell that keeps going after him. The trutth is that the video doesn’t need much more in terms of explanation. It’s just a hilarious real life take on the video game that catapaulted Mario and Luigi into global stardom. And to make things even better, the video has no spoken dialogue so you don’t even have to worry about not understanding Japanese and having to read subtitles. Just sit back and have a few laughs at Riku’s expense. Check out the video below.

Between Sushi Ramen Riku’s massive popularity, the fact that this video will appeal to anyone even vaguely familiar with the Super Mario games, and the lack of any spoken dialogue, there’s little doubt that Riku will quickly rack up millions of views with this video. In fact, it definitely wouldn’t be strange if this video ends up being one of Riku’s most successful. Anyway, regardless of the success of the video, Riku is probably just hoping that that pesky turtle shell leaves him alone.
