Police in Tokyo have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of having sprayed a man in the face with hairspray in order to incapacitate him and steal his backpack.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, on June 29 at about 3:50 a.m., the suspect, a delivery worker named Maaru Saito, sprayed a 23-year-old man that was walking along a street in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward in the face with hairspray. He then hit the man in the face and tried to steal his backpack. The victim resisted, which resulted in Saito fleeing the scene empty-handed.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his head and face which took two weeks to recover from.

Saito has been arrested on charges of attempted robbery and has admitted to the charges.

Police are currently looking into whether Saito is connected to any other similar incidents.
