Here’s to 100 more!
Although it may seem hard to believe, 2017 marked the 100th year anniversary of the birth of anime in Japan. In honor of this monumental occasion the Association of Japanese Animations has released a truly impressive compilation video featuring clips from 122 of the most beloved and important anime films and shows ever.
Released on Monday (Dec. 25), the video takes viewers on a journey that begins all the way back in June of 1917 with Hanawa Hekonai meitō no maki (塙凹内名刀之巻), a short silent animated film about a samurai who buys a dull-edged sword, and culminates in 2017 with the popular anime Osomatsu-san. Along the way the video shows clips of anime shows and films such as Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atomu), Cyborg 009, Speed Racer (Mach GoGoGo), Kinnnikuman, Touch, Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, City Hunter, Akira, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Tiger & Bunny, Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) and many many many more.
This video is part of the Association of Japanese Animation’s Anime NEXT_100 project which aims to promote Japanese animation around the world. The song used in the video is called “Tsubasa o Motsu Mono ～Not an angel Just a dreamer～” (Those who Have Wings) and is the Anime NEXT_100 project official theme song.
