At about 1 in the morning on the 22nd of November police
received a call from a man who reported that two women had jumped off
Shijushida Dam in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. First responders found two females
lying on the drainage wall slope of the south side of the dam. Although they
were taken to the hospital one girl was confirmed to be dead upon arrival. The
other girl is said to have sustained serious injuries.

The two girls, 15 and 16 years old, were students from
a local high school. They jumped from a pathway that was about 20 meters (about
65 feet) high. Their bags were found still on the road it is believed they
jumped from. It is also being reported that the main that notified the police
was an acquaintance who had gone to the dam in search of the two girls. Police
are still investigating but it appears likely that the girls were attempting to
commit suicide.

Although police have yet to make a final report and
not all is known it seems unlikely that this was not a suicide attempt. Sadly,
young people committing suicide is something far too common in Japan and it is
often caused by bullying. Recently, there have been a number of prominent cases
that have been covered rather extensively by the Japanese media and thanks to
this, awareness of this problem is quite high in Japan. However, it is debatable
whether enough is being done to combat this. If police release more information
about this case I will post about it.
