Absolutely pointless and totally sexy.
From tiny underpants for your water bottle, to figures of gorilla-faced dogs, Japankyo has covered many examples of totally ridiculous Japanese capsule toys. However, today we’ll be taking a look at what may just be the most absurd one yet: swimsuits for smartphones.
Sold via capsule toy vending machines (a.k.a. gacha gacha/gachapon) and online retailers like amazon.co.jp, these tiny swimsuits are specifically designed to fit on most smartphones.
The swimsuits still in their capsules
Each of these little swimsuits typically cost three to five hundred yen (3-5 USD). They come in both speedo/banana hammock style designs which are perfect for male smartphones and sexy bikinis for the lady phones. Series two for example, which is where the two swimsuits below are from, features a total of five unique designs, two for the guys and three for the gals.
What these swimsuits look like on a phone
Perhaps the most notable feature of these swimsuits is that they come with squishy silicone pads in the areas where your very flat and stiff smartphone needs them most. For example, in the case of the speedo, you can see in the image below that the silicone pad gives your phone the kind of profile most men dream of.

And of course, in the case of the bikini, you get two very large silicone pads right where you’d expect them to be.
In Japan, even the phones have unrealistically large breasts
It pretty much goes without saying but these swimsuits offer no protection against water. In fact, they offer pretty much no protection against anything. On top of that, they fall off constantly and even when they stay on, they just end up getting in the way. The bikini top is particularly guilty of this due to its huge size and position at the top of the screen. In other words, it seems very unlikely that cell phone swimwear will be catching on anytime soon in Japan.
