On April 22 police in Aichi Prefecture announced that they had arrested the 55-year-old boss of an organized crime gang for allegedly shoplifting apples and other items from a store in a Nagoya City shopping mall.

According to Aichi Prefectural Police, at around 7:30 p.m. on April 23, Masato Gunji, the head of a gang affiliated with the Kobe Yamaguchigumi organized crime group, shoplifted about 64 items, including apples, watermelons and various daily necessity products, the total value of which amounted to 25,357 JPY (229.41 USD).

The suspect reportedly entered the Nagoya store with two gang members. After filling up two shopping baskets with items the three men exited the Nagoya store without paying. As they were loading up the stolen items into a car in the shopping mall parking lot a 48-year-old female security guard called out to them, telling them to stop.

Police arrested Gunji on suspicion of theft. He is denying the charges, telling police “I had money. Plus, I didn’t do it.”
