On Wednesday (Apr. 5), Aomori Prefectural Police arrested a 16-year-old male resident of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, for allegedly taking a 400 km taxi ride and then fleeing without paying the more than 1,000 USD fare.

According to police, on March 16 at about 10:15 p.m., the unemployed teenager boarded a taxi in front of JR Fukushima Station in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. The teen then instructed the driver to head to a parking lot in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, which was about 400 km away.

While in the car, the driver, a 65-year-old male living in Fukushima City, and the teen discussed how much the trip would cost. The driver says that this led him to believe that the teen would be able to pay the fare.

After arriving at the parking lot at about 3:10 a.m. of the next day, the teen reportedly exited the taxi, telling the driver that he needed to go retrieve the money to pay the approximately 145,000 JPY (1,308 USD) fare. However, the teen never returned.

Police arrested the teen on suspicion of fraud. He has admitted to the allegations. As explanation for his actions the teen reportedly told police “I wanted to go back home.”
