The famous Japanese voice actress and singer, Maaya Sakamoto, shows that she can sing just as well in English as she can in Japanese in the Japanese dub of Illumination Entertainment’s computer animated musical film, Sing.

Sakamoto is known for her extensive work in the anime industry. Not only has she provided the voices for popular anime characters like Hitomi Kanzaki (The Vision of Escaflowne),  Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club) and Motoko Kusanagi (newer Ghost in the Shell movies), she has also sung the theme songs for numerous major anime, such as Record of Lodoss War, RahXephon and Cardcaptor Sakura. In the Japanese dub of Sing, which was released today (Mar. 17) in Japan, Sakamoto takes over the role of Rosita the pig (originally played by Reese Witherspoon). The video below shows a short clip from the film, in which Sakamoto does a spot-on rendition of Katy Perry’s hit song, “Firework.”

Due to Sing being an animated family film, the marketing for this movie has placed a lot of attention on the Japanese dub. The video below, is an amusing commercial showing Japanese comedian Tsukasa Saito appearing alongside the character he plays in the film, Gunter the pig. Gunter was originally played by Nick Kroll.
