Police in Tokyo have arrested a 33-year-old male part time restaurant worker after he allegedly spit ice cream into the face of a random woman on the street because he thought she was making fun of him.

According to Tokyo Metropolitan Police, on May 21 at about 2:25 p.m., the suspect was walking along a sidewalk in Tokyo’s Ota Ward eating an azuki (red bean) flavored monaka ice cream (Japanese ice cream sandwich), when all of a sudden he spit the ice cream he had in his mouth into the face of a woman in her 20s who was walking by him heading in the opposite direction.

Police arrested the man under suspicion of assault. He has admitted to the allegations saying “I felt like the woman looked at my face and laughed at me. I thought she was making fun of me.” and “I thought the woman was talking bad about me so I tried to make her shut up.”

At least four similar incidents involving women getting spit in the face by a man on the street have been reported in the Ota Ward area since last month. Police are investigating whether the suspect is responsible for these incidents as well.
