A fan of the virtual pop idol Hatsune Miku has released a video showing him using a pair of n augmented reality/mixed reality glasses in order to go on a date with the Vocaloid voiced idol in the real world.
Released by YouTube user alcione on April 23, this new video shows off the results of alcione’s efforts to create a Hatsune Miku augmented reality (AR) program that makes it possible for the virtual idol to realistically move around in real world environments and interact with the AR system user.

In the video, alcione explains through text that, as opposed to his first attempt in 2012, when he used a custom built AR rig made using an Asus Xtion motion sensor and HMD Wrap920VR video goggles, this time around he uses a pair of Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality smartglasses, which are specifically designed to have the kind of functionality necessary to bring a virtual idol into the physical world.

In order to make Miku appear on screen and start your ‘date’ alcione explains that you have to say “Switch on.” Once on screen you can have her walk alongside you, sit down where you tell her to, respond to “caresses” that you perform via gestures and, of course, kiss you.

Alcione also points out a few things he still wants to improve, such as making the caressing gestures more natural and giving Miku the ability to have conversations by connecting her to an online database. So it seems like this AR Miku program will only continue to improve with time.
